‘Wonder and Woe’ images of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition feature stunning visuals of wildlife in their natural habitats. One of these images was taken in the small Kenyan village of Kitengela, shows an Oryx (Oryx gazella) caught between a herd of cattle and the quickly disappearing savannah. The stark contrast between the animals’ close proximity and the encroaching habitat loss creates a sense of ‘wonder and woe.’ Another photograph, taken in the coastal waters of the Antarctic, captures a group of Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) who waddle up a sheet of floating ice, off to explore their new domain. The birds’ playful curiosity is juxtaposed with the eerie emptiness of the frigid Antarctic landscape, evoking a sense of ‘wonder and woe.’
