At least 56 killed after suicide bombings rip through two religious ceremonies in Pakistan

At least 56 people were killed and dozens more were injured in two separate suicide bombings in Pakistan on Thursday.

The first blast occurred at a Sufi shrine in the southwestern Balochistan province, killing at least 28 people and wounding another 30. The second bombing took place at a Shia mosque in the eastern city of Lahore, killing 28 and wounding 64.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for either attack, although the Taliban have carried out previous attacks in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Imran Khan, condemned the attacks, calling them “cowardly” and vowing to “eliminate the menace of terrorism from our soil”.

The attacks come amid increasing sectarian violence in the country, particularly against members of the minority Shia community.
